CALOR GAS APPLIANCE FAQS

Bulk Gas

  1.  Do Calor Gas supply Bulk Storage tanks?
    Yes we supply LPG bulk storage tanks above ground and semi mounded.
  1.  If my LP Gas tank was supplied by one company, would I also have to buy my gas from the same company?
    Yes, the bulk tank is actually owned by the company and therefore can only be filled by that company.
  1.  Do Calor Gas provide the service of supplying and fitting a tank and boiler?
    Calor Gas and install the tank but you will need to arrange the installation of your boiler with a local installer. We have a database of recommended installers nationwide and will therefore be able to provide you with the name of one in your area.
  1.  Where can I find information about converting from oil central heating to LP Gas central heating?
    Call us on Dublin 01 450 5000 or Belfast 028 9045 5588 and we will arrange for an area specialist to visit and carry out a site survey and give you all the information you need. They will also supply a no obligatory quotation for gas supply.
  1.  Can I take a meter reading myself?
    Yes, you can. Calor Gas have meter readers who operate nationwide. However if at some point you want to take you own meter reading you can do so and phone our Accounts Receivable department with the reading.
  1.  How often will my bulk tank be filled?
    You have 2 options, automatic top up or order only. At Calor Gasthe automatic top up option is the most popular option for our customers. Calor will automatically top up your tank throughout the year so you never have to worry about running out of gas. The frequency of delivery will be dependent upon your usage.With order only, you can phone us when you�re running low and we will call out and fill your tank.
  1.  How do I know if my tank is operating as it should?
    When Calor Gas tank drivers fill your tank, they also do a visual inspection to ensure that everything is in order.

Cylinders

  1.  Which gas cylinder should I use for my barbecue, heater, fire etc?
    Below is a Guide for Domestic Customers, as to which Calor gas storage option (i.e. bulk tank or relevant cylinder size), you should use depending on the application. Calor central heating If you install Calor central heating, you will most likely have a bulk tank installed at your home. If there is no appropriate site for the tank then Calor can supply 4 large cylinders, which would be connected to your central heating system. If you have Calor central heating and you also have a gas fire and a gas cooker installed, they will run off the same supply. Calor gas fire If you have a gas fire but you do not have Calor gas central heating, your supply will operate via a twin pack cylinder supply i.e. 2 red 34kg cylinders. Calor gas fuelled cooker/hob If you have a gas cooker or a gas hob but you do not have Calor central heating, you supply will operate via either an 11.34kg yellow cylinder or via a twin pack cylinder supply as described above. Calor gas bbq You should use our grey Calor Patio gas cylinder or our 11.34kg yellow cylinder to fuel your Calor gas bbq. Calor patio heater You should use our grey Calor Patio gas cylinder to fuel your Calor patio heater.   1.  Do I need to pay an initial charge if I don�t have a bottle to start with?
    Yes you will need to pay a cylinder service charge which covers the cost and maintenance of the cylinders.
  1.  What is the cost of the initial charge on a cylinder?
    This varies between cylinder size and type, please ask your local Calor retailer and they will let you know.
  1.  How full is a Calor gas cylinder in a full condition, in percentage terms?
    All cylinders are 80-87% full as space needs to be left for the expansion of liquid. The weight on the front of the cylinder is the total weight of gas in the bottle.
  1.  I have inherited unwanted empty Calor cylinders and I would like to know how to dispose of them?
    You can bring your empty cylinders to your local Calor retailer and he will take them from you.
  1.  I have an empty cylinder which I no longer need and do not have the Cylinder Service Registration form, does that mean I am unable to claim any available refund?
    Unfortunately yes, although we will be happy to take the cylinder back.
  1.  Do cylinders have any seal?
    Calor Gas 11.34kg, 5kg and Patio gas cylinders all have a green cap with a red seal and this should not be broken or tampered with at the point of purchase.

General

  1.  What is the calorific value of LPG?
    Butane = 7.8 kWH/Litre (of liquid)Propane = 7.1 kWH/Litre (of liquid)
  1.  Do you have a facility to pay bills online?
    Yes, you can now register with mycalorgas.com and manage your Calor account online, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can place an order for gas (if you are not already using our Automatic top-up service). If you have a metered has supply you will be able tosubmit a meter reading to ensure up-to-date billing on your account. You can also reconcile your account by viewing and printing invoices and statements.
  1.  Who do I contact if I wish to set up a direct debit for my bill?
    Calor Gas Accounts Receivable department can help you with this. Contact them on Dublin 01 450 5000 or Belfast 028 9045 5588.
  1.  I want to spread the cost of my peak fuel bills, is this possible?
    Yes, it is. You can sign up to the Calor Budget Plan, which will allow you to make regular planned payments throughout the year. You will have 11 equal monthly payments. December will be a payment free month. Call our Accounts Receivable department on Dublin 01 450 5000 or Belfast 028 9045 5588
  1.  I have a cooker/heater etc which I need serviced/repaired, who should I talk to?
    Call Calor and we will give you the name and number of someone who can call out to you.

  1.  What is the difference between butane and propane?
    Propane (bulk tanks, large red and green cylinders and grey patio cylinders) has a lower boiling point than butane (yellow cylinders) and is stored at a higher pressure so it is more suited for storage outside. Butanes boiling point (conversion from liquid to gas) is around 0
  2. C so in colder conditions around this temperature, it will not work.
  1.  Are the two gases interchangeable?
    If the appliance states in the manufacturers guidelines that it can run on propane and butane, then you will need the right regulator for the gas you are using. You can only interchange the gases if it is stated by the appliance manufacturer.
  1.  Are the valves/fittings the same?
    No, you will require different regulators.
